Surfaces

Bonding substrate:

To select the right tape is important take the following guidelines into consideration

1.) Determine if the substrate has a high or low surface energy. Some adhesives have a good bonding strength on plastics while others will perform best only on steel or glass

Typical Low surface energy substrates:
  • Polyethylene
  • Polypropylene
  • Polyurethane EPDM
  • Silicone
Typical high energy substrates:
  • Glass
  • Metal
  • Aluminium
  • Polyester

2) Surface roughness and gap - in order to acheive a good permanent bond it is necessary to ensure 100% surface contact between the adhesive and substrate and for this the right thickness of tape to be used. The rougher or more uneven the substrate is, the thicker tape (more adhesive) is needed.
